One Day in Milan

A Day in Milan

MILAN, YESTERDAY AND TODAY
Milan, founded by the Gauls Insubri around 400 B.C., has a rich and fascinating history. During the Roman period, it became a strategic center and the capital of the Transpadana region. In the 3rd century, Milan was the center of the Diocese of Italy Annona. During the reign of Saint Ambrose, the city was the capital of the Western Roman Empire.

In the 12th century, Milan was an important economic center with guilds. In the 14th century, the rise of Gian Galeazzo Visconti expanded Milan's dominion, culminating in the creation of the Duchy of Milan in 1395. The city played a key role in Italian nationalism and the Five Days of Milan in 1848. It remained under Austrian rule until 1859.

Milan was also the cradle of fascism, with Mussolini founding the first Fasci of Combat in 1919. After World War II, the city returned to being an important industrial and financial center, currently home to nearly seven million inhabitants.

Today, Milan is recognized as Italy's industrial, financial, and commercial center. It is famous as the world capital of fashion and design, skillfully balancing its rich history with modern architecture. The main attractions include the Sforza Castle, Piazza Mercanti, Piazza della Scala, Piazza Duomo, and the Milan Cathedral.
